Golf Stars head to the coast

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Workers have been busy getting ready for the big crowds expected at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. This week, 79 players will to tee off in the games, that will feature some big names in golf.

Tournament Director Steve Nieman said it's an event you won't want to miss.

"We've got four World Golf Hall of Fame members. Hale Irwin, Tom Kite in this field, Tom Lehman, Mark Calcavecchia," said Nieman. "We've got a great field."

The golf heavy-weights featured in the tournament may have some notable accomplishments under their belts, but tournament coordinators say they're just nice guys.

"They know how to interact with the fans, they know how to interact with the sponsors. You have to see it to believe it," Nieman explained.

Event coordinators said last year's classic was a success. And when you consider the extent of preparation that has gone into the tournament this year, they said it's almost guaranteed to be better.

"We had a lot more time to prepare, which has made a difference in a lot of the areas of community support programs we've put together."

Over the weekend, the tournament sponsored a Junior Clinic for more than 200 kids at Shell Landing.

The main event will also offer a completely revamped parking system, along with other improvements over last year. With the stage set, organizers said the only thing missing is you.

"We're going make sure we have a great show. When people show up, they're going know that they can all be proud of what so many people have gotten behind for the coast."
