National debt clock to be erected in Gautier

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

Young Americans for Liberty, a student organization at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Jackson County campus, will erect a 40-foot National Debt Clock at the walkway between the LRC building and the Science building.

The organization will also petition Congressman Steven Palazzo to come to the Gautier campus and address the $14 trillion national debt.

The organizers of the debt clock construction say if politicians do not tackle the upcoming debt crisis, our generation will suffer grave consequences.

After seeing our story on WLOX.com, Congressman Palazzo emailed us the following statement:

"It is refreshing to see college students interested in such a critical issue. Like these students, I recognize that unless serious changes are made, our country may soon be bankrupt," Palazzo wrote.

"Ronald Reagan once referred to America as a 'shining city upon a hill' - a beacon of light to the world. Unfortunately, that light is being dimmed by a darkening cloud of debt. This crisis was decades in the making and it will take time to correct it," Palazzo continued.

"That is what is at stake in Congress. House Republicans have led the way to cut federal spending. In the past three months, we've voted to cut federal spending by $656 billion. Yet, Senate Democrats and this Administration refuse to listen to the American people. It is time for Senate Democrats to act responsibly and join us in fixing this problem."

The goal of Young Americans for Liberty at MGCCC is to raise awareness about the dangers of the national debt. The event is part of a nationwide "Visualize the Debt" project by Young Americans for Liberty with more than 75 college campuses participating.

Organizers will be erecting the debt clock every day this week from 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
