What is being called a "world class" waterpark could be up and running in Gulfport by May of next year.
Tuesday, the Gulfport city council is expected to sign off on a deal for a Louisiana company to build and operate the park. It would be called the Gulf Islands Waterpark, and will have a price tag of seven and a half million dollars.
The park will be located at the Sportsplex, off of Interstate ten. The city's director of Leisure Services, George DeCoux, calls it a great deal for the city. Coastal Entertainment will lease the 18 acres from the city.
The company will pay Gulfport $78,000 each of the first two years. That price will go up during the 25 years of the lease. The city will also get $3 for every person who is admitted. Since projections call for a yearly attendance of about 300,000 people, that could mean an additional one million dollars for the city.
