CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - A new exhibit focusing on the founding of Camp Shelby will soon be officially open at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum. The "Origins of Camp Shelby" exhibit highlights, in particular, the efforts of Hattiesburg physician Dr. Walter Crawford, who was instrumental in convincing the Army to locate a training facility in Hattiesburg.
Camp Shelby first opened in July, 1918, and it trained thousands of soldiers for World War I.
"We spent a lot of time researching Dr. Crawford's life," said Chad Daniels, director of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum. "Not only did he get Camp Shelby here, he served as the chief surgeon at the base hospital and later, served in the Verdun hospital in France," Daniels said.
Last year, nearly 50,000 people visited the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby.
