GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Veterans of Foreign Wars from Mississippi gathered Saturday for the 2011 Mid-Winter Conference in Gulfport. The joint business meeting with VFW members and the Ladies Auxiliary is held each year.

Hundreds of men and women who fought for our freedom sat and listened to people they admire talk about the work VFW posts throughout Mississippi have accomplished during 2010.

Richard Fetters was amongst the crowd. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1988 after serving 20 years.

"We help each other and we help those who can't help themselves," Fetters said.

Fetters has been attending the conference for many years and said it's something he looks forward to every year.

"We just do it to conduct the business of the state and to make sure all the posts are doing all their programs," said Fetters.

The Mid-Winter Conference has been held for more than 70 years. Each year the VFW team is able to sit down and see what they have achieved as a whole over the past year and prepare for the future.

Fetters said, "What we're going to do in the Fall, and six months, and getting ready for next year also."

Co-Chairman for the conference, Ann Berryman, said it's a time for planning.

"The purpose of the meeting is to instruct our auxiliaries in the department, the whole state, to instruct them in the ways and in the bylaws of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary," said Berryman.

She said as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, it's very important to her to continue helping out the retirees year after year.

"Continue the work we do with our programs and to help our veterans. Our main purpose is to take care of our veterans," said Berryman.

"And help those who are still in the service and their families," Fetters said.

Members of the VFW of the United States also attended the conference. The Mid-Winter Conference is held every year. Saturday's conference was held at the Ramada Inn on Highway 49 in Gulfport.
