BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - Habitat for Humanity Bay-Waveland Area was recently honored as 2010 Affiliate of the Year by Habitat for Humanity International. The affiliate was formed in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, and has received the award for the second consecutive year.

HFH Bay-Waveland was recognized through the "Pioneers in Excellence" award program, which honors Habitat affiliates that demonstrate creativity, innovation, and productivity in their communities. The award singled out HFHBW for excellence in service in communities of 50,000 and below.

Some of the affiliate's accomplishments include: 

  • More than 155 homes built through volunteers, donors, families, staff and friends.
  • More than 5,000 volunteers from all 50 states and a few foreign countries. 
  • More than $15 million invested in Hancock County through generous partnerships with HFHBW. 
  • The first (and currently only) house in Mississippi to receive an Emerald green building certification, which is the highest level conferred by the National Association of Home Builders Research Center. This house also placed second in Mississippi Home Corporation's "Building A Greener Mississippi" competition in 2009. 
  • The first (and currently only) house in Mississippi to receive a LEED Platinum green building certification, which is the highest level conferred by the U.S. Green Building Council. 
  • Bay-Waveland Habitat's commitment to green building was recently featured in both USA Today and EcoHome Magazine.

"While we are thrilled to receive this recognition, we are mostly humbled by the realization that we stand on the very broad shoulders of thousands of volunteers, donors, staff and friends," commented Wendy McDonald, Executive Director of Bay-Waveland Habitat. "We thank all of them for their continued partnership in this most important work."
