Biloxi man shocked to lose wind coverage

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Larry Jones just received a letter from his insurance company, and it has him steamed.

USAA Insurance is the latest carrier to announce plans to drop wind coverage from its homeowners' policies in the three coastal counties of Mississippi.

"It said I would be dropped from wind and hail coverage," said Jones. "I was really shocked."

It was especially surprising because he's been with USAA for 47 years. The company caters to military personnel and their families, so the action will impact about 1,550 policy holders. All of them, including Jones, will take a financial hit from the company's decision to non-renew coverage.

"I was really upset. But I've been on the phone. I'm trying to negotiate. I feel better about working it out," Jones said optimistically.

USAA is following the lead of other major carriers in post-Katrina South Mississippi. Drop wind coverage, reduce the company's risk and force homeowners into the Mississippi wind pool.

"That's going to be a big increase. But, I'll be able to adjust other parts of my insurance down," Jones said as he scrambles to make his insurance coverage work.

Jones advises other USAA customers to be pro-active. He suggests they talk to the company and look for ways to adjust coverage to minimize the pain.
