PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A gas leak at Northrop Grumman Ingalls shipyard has about 1,300 workers heading home.
Northrop Grumman spokesman Bill Glenn says while making facility improvements, workers discovered a propylene gas leak on the dock near the ship LPD 24. No one was injured in Tuesday's incident and crews working on LPD 24 were sent home as a precaution.
That same ship was evacuated a little more than two weeks ago after an explosion and fire. The December fire was put out quickly and work was suspended on both the LPD 24 and the LPD 22. A worker told WLOX News he suspected that fire began after an electrical short ignited gas lines used in the welding process.
Glenn expects Tuesday's repair work to be completed by the end of the day. All second shift employees working on LPD 24 should report to work as scheduled.
