BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints will begin defense of their title in the Pacific Northwest. Late Sunday night, the Seattle Seahawks held off the St. Louis Rams, and clinched the league's final playoff berth.
Despite having a 7-9 record, that victory earned the Seahawks the NFC West division title, and a date with the Saints. Seattle is the first team to win a division with a losing record.
New Orleans is the five seed in the NFC, meaning it plays at the division champ with the worst record. Kickoff of the wild card playoff game is at 3:30 Saturday afternoon at Quest Field in Seattle.
The Saints come into the game with an 11-5 regular season record. They lost Sunday to Tampa Bay 23-13. But knowing there was no way they could improve their playoff positioning, the Saints rested key players in the second half, including quarterback Drew Brees.
The other wild card game on Saturday is the New York Jets at the Indianapolis Colts. On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs. And the Green Bay Packers go to Philadelphia to play the NFC East division champion Eagles.
Jeff Shepard will be at the Saints training facility on Monday to talk with key players about their matchup with Seattle. Look for his reports on WLOX News at 6 and on WLOX.com.
