Mississippi shrimp season extended

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

BILOXI, MS (WLOX/AP) - Mississippi shrimpers got a break Wednesday with an announcement that the season has been extended through Jan. 14 for state waters north of the Intracoastal Waterway. The season had been scheduled to close Saturday. The season will now end at 12:01 a.m. on Feb. 15.

Mississippi territorial waters south of the Intracoastal Waterway will remain open through April.

The Department of Marine Resources preliminary figures show, as expected, 2010 was a tough year for Mississippi shrimpers. Compare the live weight catch totals from the last three years.

2008
Brown Shrimp: 5,382,305 lbs.
White Shrimp: 3,175,531 lbs.

2009
Brown Shrimp: 6,347,459 lbs.
White Shrimp: 3,735,702 lbs.

2010 (Preliminary figures, Jan 1-Dec 22)
Brown Shrimp: 1,589,109 lbs.
White Shrimp: 2,335,182 lbs.
