Gulfport Kwanzaa celebration to reconnect generations

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A coast-wide celebration of Kwanzaa will take place Thursday at 7:30p.m. The Good Deeds Community Center (15101 Madison Street, Gulfport) will host the celebration.

The theme of this year's celebration is "Reconnect." The idea, according to this organizers, is to reconnect the community on many different levels. In particular, organizers are striving to reconnect the older and younger generations.

Some of the young people who grew up taking part in this celebration have stepped up to organize this year's event. They say it symbolizes a passing of the torch from one generation to the next.

Kwanzaa is a celebration rooted in African culture which celebrate family, community and culture. The word Kwanzaa is Swahili, a Pan-African language, meaning "first fruits." It's celebrated from December 26th through January 1st. It was established by Dr. Maulana Karenga in the 1960s.
