BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Just a month and a half after opening, the new Ohr O'Keefe Museum of Art is asking the city of Biloxi for $10,000 a month to keep it in operation.
Museum officials made the request at Tuesday's city council meeting. The issue was tabled after Councilman Tom Wall said there needs to be further discussion about whether the city has the money to fund the museum.
One Biloxi resident at the meeting spoke up about why in this tough economy, the city should not put up the money.
"We've cut this budget to the bare bones. Well, if you've cut to the bare bones, then where's this $10,000 coming from to go to the museum?" Mary Rose Leahy asked. "I'm telling you, you've got no right to spend the tax payers' money on a private endeavor started by private people. Let them pay for it, not the tax payers of the city of Biloxi."
There's no word on when the request will be discussed further.
