Gulfport church feeds the hungry

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport church is opening its doors to the hungry today. Fernwood Baptist Church on Pass Road is serving free hot soup from 11 am until 1 pm.

The church ladies have whipped up several varieties of soup including chicken noodle, turkey, venison, and taco. They are also serving chili, sandwiches, chips and homemade desserts.

The congregation says the cold weather inspired them to offer the "soup kitchen". They worry about the homeless going hungry and as well as those who have a place to live but who are struggling  to buy food because of job losses and the weak economy.

Church members say since their new pastor arrived, he has challenged them to do more outreach missions to help the community.
