BILOXI – (WLOX) WLOX Sports has learned that George County head football coach and Athletic Director Al Jones is retiring.

Jones led the Rebel football program for 10 years. He was an assistant in Lucedale for 12 seasons prior to that. In the decade under Jones' leadership, George County amassed a 92-and-35 record. The Rebels made the playoffs all 10 seasons Jones was in charge.

Prior to his tenure in Lucedale, Jones was also an assistant at Vancleave and on the 1986 state championship team at Picayune.

Jones' best George County team was the 2007 unit that featured Alonzo Lawrence, Tookie Hopkins and Billey Joe Johnson. That team finished the year 13-2 and advanced to the Class 5A state championship game. The Rebels lost a hard-fought contest to South Panola 28-21. In 2002, Jones led the Rebels to the Class 4A South State championship game.

We'll update this story on WLOX Sports Friday night.
