WOOLMARKET, MS (WLOX) - It's a Christmas story come to life. But, instead of Santa Claus, the Hayes Produce Stand in Woolmarket got a visit from the Grinch. The owners of the stand have reported that nearly $1,000 in Christmas trees have been stolen from their stand.
"I was loading some up to take to Biloxi to sale, and I went around there, and I noticed a big empty spot. Those were actually the trees I had planned on taking with me, and that's why we noticed them so quickly," said Pollyanna Powers, who works at the stand with her father.
The owners believe the theft had to happen between 9pm and 4am Thursday morning. The thieves took the trees from the back corner of the lot, a sneaky feet considering that the owners were sleeping nearby in a trailer just feet from where the trees stood.
"We just never even dreamed that someone would come out here and take them like that," said Powers.
The trees on this lot are Cypress trees, and police say that might make them easier to spot if they are sold, because most lots use Douglas or other fir trees.
"I just don't understand why anybody would want to do that. I don't know who it could have been," said Powers.
The owners have filed a report with the authorities and are hopeful that whoever took the trees will be caught. Until then, they will continue to sell their trees until Christmas day.
