GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - On one of the coldest night of the season, a Gulfport neighborhood will be without power for hours.
Around 7pm Wednesday night, a vehicle struck a power pole along old Highway 49 near Lyman Elementary. The impact killed the driver, who has not yet been identified, and cut off power to the surrounding area.
By 10pm, Mississippi Power officials had restored electricity to some customers, but about 100 remained in the dark.
The city of Gulfport opened the Orange Grove/Lyman Community Center to give those without power a place to stay warm. Representatives from the Red Cross and the City's recreation department will be at the center on Highway 49.
Crews are working to get power restored, however they don't expect it will be on before midnight.
