Gulfport's latest fire chief nominee has Michigan roots

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) – Michael Beyerstedt has a lengthy list of community service projects he's participated in while working for the Jackson, Michigan fire department. He's also a 21 year veteran of the fire department, and its current chief. Those qualifications are why Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel has selected Beyerstedt to become Gulfport's next fire chief.

In a letter to the Gulfport City Council, Schloegel said, "I am confident Chief Beyerstedt will bring the same leadership, community involvement, and commitment to our City that he has provided to the citizens of Jackson, MI."

The fire department in Michigan has more than 35 staff members. Gulfport's fire team is much larger. Nevertheless, Mayor Schloegel is confident Beyerstedt is the right person to run his department. "I am honored to present Chief Beyerstedt for your consideration and for your confirmation," the mayor wrote.

If the city council ratifies Beyerstedt's appointment, he could take over the Gulfport Fire Department in January.

In August, Mayor Schloegel selected David Foster to run the fire department. But two weeks later, Foster turned down the position, and took a similar job in Texas.
