BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Biloxi officials hope the location of a new Walmart Supercenter will give a boost to the city's west end. Mayor A.J. Holloway told WLOX News he's expecting "some big things" in the area of CT Switzer Road between DeBuys Road and Eisenhower Drive where the new super Walmart is slated to go.
"I think our sales tax will go up, take a good little hit and go up," Holloway said.
Not only does the mayor expect the new Walmart to increase tax revenue, he also expects it to spur much needed development in the west end of Biloxi.
"Since Katrina, nothing has been happening there. But I think once Walmart gets there, you will see some activity on that area too. Particularly with Edgewater there and Edgewater Mall, Super Walmart and others. I know for sure McDonalds will be one of the parcels and I'm sure we will see some more," Holloway said.
But with all those developments in store, there is more work that needs to be done.
"Right now we are working with MDOT to see if we can't locate a traffic signal there by the House of Pancakes from Highway 90 into the location there. And they have purchased some property to widen the street to go in there that way," Holloway said.
He said Walmart is looking into adding a new street from Hwy 90, which will probably be finished during the building process.
"Now it's a matter of time when they get ready to start," Holloway said.
Once construction begins, the mayor said it will take 12 months before Walmart opens its doors. The city council is expected to give final approval for the project this Tuesday. Mayor Holloway said he sees no problem with it passing.
