Ocean Springs says goodbye to a community, spiritual leader

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Hundreds of people in Ocean Springs are saying their final farewells to the Reverend Jesse Trotter today.

Dr. Trotter died Thanksgiving night. He just recently retired as minister of Macedonia Baptist Church in Ocean Springs.

The funeral and memorial service drew such a crowd, the City of Ocean Springs even closed MLK and Denny Avenue for about a hour Thursday morning to help control traffic.

Doug Walker was at the service and later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com, he'll have more on the Reverend Trotter's life, and his service to the community.

Those who knew Dr. Trotter best say his life was an inspiration to others. He dropped out of school in 1938, but reentered school at Natchez Jr. College High School and finished in 1953. In 1955 he graduated from Natchez Jr. College with the highest academic average of his class. He would go on to earn many more degrees over the years.

He was married to the late Senora Lucille Williams Trotter. Together, they had eight children.
