Hebert says he flirted with Joanna the entire time they had volunteered together with their church's youth group, but Joanna never noticed. A full year after they met, Hebert asked Joanna to dinner, which she thought was pretty out of the blue.

THE BRIDE: Joanna, 25, a designer
THE GROOM: Hebert, 23, a mechanical engineer
THE DATE: July 25

Two-and-a-half years and many more dates later, while Joanna and Hebert were star-gazing up north, Hebert started speaking in Portuguese, his first language. At first, Joanna thought she was in for another lesson, but then Hebert translated what he had said: He had asked her to be his wife.

The Centerpieces To add more depth to the room, the couple chose four different types of centerpieces to alternate on the tables, each with a minimalist vibe. Their own table had a low, square vase filled with white hydrangeas, green dendrobium orchids, yellow craspedia, and green moss balls and stones.

The Ceremony Both Joanna's and Hebert's families are Christian, so their ceremony included mostly Christian traditions. Because Joanna is also Jewish, the two married beneath a huppah of greenery and incorporated some wedding traditions from that faith as well.

The Escort Cards The guest's escort cards did double-duty: The table numbers were printed on CDs, which were filled with music played throughout the day. The couple also included a note letting them know about their donations to two charities.

The Reception Joanna and Hebert both love art and culture, so following their religious ceremony and an afternoon reception, they had an evening party at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Joanna even earned a degree from College for Creative Studies, located right behind the DIA.

The Cake Joanna and Hebert served a three-tiered, buttercream-frosted wedding cake at their evening reception. The square tiers evoked a city feel while green cymbidium orchids, salal leaves, and yellow craspedia added a rustic touch.
