It's estimated there are about six hundred homeless people in South Mississippi. Recently an event was held to offer help to the homeless in our community. It was called Project Homeless Connect and it brought together agencies and services that the homeless might not be able to access every day.
They had medical folks taking blood pressure readings and performing other minor medical tests. Supplies like shoes for the winter were also provided. In addition people were able to do one-on-one sit downs with agencies tailored to their individual situations.
What Project Homeless Connect did was much needed. Just like all the soup kitchens and other agencies that provide food and shelter to the homeless on a daily basis. As a community we need to be more willing to discuss the homeless issue and find ways to reduce the number of homeless among us. We need more programs like Project Homeless Connect, on a more regular basis, to help those who need a helping hand up.
