LUCEDALE, MS (WLOX) -

GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - There's a new sheriff officially leading George County now. Sheriff Tony Keel was sworn in Monday afternoon at the administration building in Lucedale.

The 23 year law enforcement veteran will take over for the late Sheriff Garry Welford who died when two suspects struck him with their vehicle during a police pursuit in July. Since then, Welford's widow has been serving as interim Sheriff.

Keel said he will use his new position to hire narcotics agents to combat the county's drug problem. He also wants to put more reserve officers on the streets to keep neighborhoods safe.
