BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Surge treated the crowd of 2,516 inside the Mississippi Coast Coliseum to an exciting SPHL hockey game. Maybe not as exciting as the Auburn comeback win over Alabama in the Iron Bowl, but it kept fans glued to their seats.
Pensacola cracked the Surge net at the 1:20 mark in the first period. Matt Whitehead sliced the puck past Mississippi goalkeeper Jeremie Dupont. Nine seconds later Michael Richard tied the game on a nice wrap-around.
Matt Whitehead would come right back at the 6:19 mark giving the Ice Flyers a 2-1 advantage. Rusty Masters would knot up the game 2-all 8 minutes into the first period, aggressively flying down the ice before he let the puck fly past Pensacola goalkeeper Ryan Scott.
Before the first period came to an end, Kyle Dorowicz kept attacking the net and finally broke through with a goal at the 12:43 mark. Surge trailed 3-2.
Mississippi would outscore Pensacola 2-1 in the second period thanks to the play of Matt Zultek. He netted both goals, the first one at 16:43 of the period and the second one 16 seconds later.
Beeman gave the Surge its first lead in the game at 3:26 of the final period before Matt Whitehead came up with a hat trick, delivering his 3rd goal at 6:59 of the third period.
Coach Steffan Walby would watch his Surge pull out a 6-5 shootout victory. Rusty Masters came through with the winning shot.
Goalkeeper Jeremie Dupont stopped 20 of 25 shots on goal to pick up the win. Ryan Scott suffered the loss, stopping 39 of 44 shots on goal.
The Surge travel to Louisiana Saturday night.
