JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Jackson County Sheriff's Department has arrested 22 people so far this year on internet child porn related charges, including one earlier this week.
"He was using his landlord's internet and that is how he was using his child pornography," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said of the latest arrest.
The most high profile child porn cases his department handled this year include the arrests of two Ocean Springs police officers. One had resigned just before the arrest, the other was on active duty.
"My hat is off to Ocean Springs," Byrd said. "When they suspected it, they called us, and we went in and checked and found it. They did what they had to do. We will not tolerate it, I don't care who you are."
The sheriff will soon assign a second full time person to investigate child porn on the internet. He also realizes even with this very advanced software, some people are going to attempt to find a way around it.
"We have not told all of our secrets, and we are not going to, how we track these folks," he said.
The sheriff wants people to know his department will stay vigilant in their determination to catch those who prey on children.
"These people, in my opinion, are garbage," he said. "When you take advantage of children like that, they need to be in jail and they don't need to be getting out."
The sheriff made his comments during an appearance on WLOX News This Week.
