Keel wins George Co. Sheriff's race

GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Voters in George County have chosen Tony Keel as the new sheriff. Keel beat out Bobby Fairley in Tuesday's runoff with 2,722 votes to Fairley's 1,938. Keel is already serving as a chief deputy in the Sheriff's Department.

George County's late Sheriff Garry Welford was killed in July, trying to stop two suspects that were fleeing from officers in a vehicle. Welford's wife has acted as interim Sheriff until a special election could be held.

Keel will assume the job of Sheriff as soon as the vote can be certified and he's sworn in. He will serve the remainder of Sheriff Welford's term.
