Hancock County Campground Opens Under New Ownership

It's been called one of Hancock County's best kept secrets, but that's quickly changing as more and more nature lovers are discovering Scenic Trails Campground and RV Park.

The 376 acre facility recently reopened under new ownership after being closed for nearly two years. Nestled in the wooded hillside of North Hancock County, camp ground leaders say Scenic Trails is a nature lovers' paradise.

"I would say it's really beautiful really wooded has a lot of shade it's just a unique place to get away from it all," Campground Manager Kathy Ladner said.

Tranquility Lake as it's called is perhaps the biggest draw to the campground. Canoers and fishermen enjoy tapping the calm waters of the five acre lake. For those who prefer getting wet in water, they can do so in the swimming pool behind the park's clubhouse.

Denise Ladner, a frequent camper at the park, told WLOX NEWS, "We try to spend all summer out here with the kids before school starts. The children just have such a great time, they can ride all through the park on their bicycles, go swimming, fishing, canoeing, and it's a lot of fun."

The park boasts 189 camp sites, most complete with water and electrical hook-ups. And for those who really want to get close to nature, how about hiking through miles of nature trails.

"This is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life," another frequent visitor, Donald Cuevas, said.

For those who enjoy more "man-made" recreation areas, there's everything from playground equipment to tennis courts.

The park manager said there are also activities like "shuffle board, volleyball, basketball, horseshoe pitch, four wheeler riding, golf cart rentals."

Joe Waltman camps at the park almost every weekend.

He says, "It's a nice park to bring your family, they just love it. They could stay out here seven days a week."

That why he says North Hancock County 's best kept secret won't stay that way for long.

Scenic Trails is located on Wolf Creek Road in North Hancock County. For more information you can contact the Campground at 255-4805.
