Job Fair Comes Just In Time For Some Hancock County Workers

Mike Hermann is one of 116 people who will be out of a job when the Alcan Cable Plant closes this summer. A manufacturing specialist with the company for nearly 16 years he says he never thought he'd find himself in this position.

"I'm having to look for another job where I planned on staying with Alcan until I retired. I haven't had to look for a job in 16 years so it's put me in an uncomfortable position to say the least. I'm hoping to find a position similar to what I have in management."

The companies represented at this job fair included, Nissan, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and Wal-mart, which will hire nearly 300 people to staff its new Super Center now under construction in Waveland.

"It's everything from grocery side general merchandise side from pushing carts to cashiers to unloading trucks to stocking trucks to paying the bills," Wal-mart's Waveland Store Manager Ray Cox said.

"Mainly right now we're looking for production technicians also maintenance techs," Nissan's Human Resources Director Heather Lloyd said.

She says the job fair produced more than 70 possible candidates for the positions Nissan has available.

"This is the only job fair Nissan will be doing this year in the State of Mississippi and the reason they are here is because Alcan provides a good match for them and what they're looking for in their plant," Hancock County's Chamber of Commerce Director Tish Williams said.

The fair wasn't exclusive to Alcan workers, it was open to anyone looking for work.

Dayna Martial, a Bay St. Louis resident, has been looking for a job for several months.

"Desk work, clerical work, secretarial work, anything I can get right now, I'll take it."

Eighty-eight people were offered jobs at Wednesday's fair, but with so many qualified applicants, the employers say that number could swell to 600 within the next year.

Wal-mart will continue its own hiring fair Thursday through Saturday from 8 am til 6 pm. The fair will be held in the same location at the Hancock County Civic Center on Longfellow Road in Bay St. Louis.
