OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Jackson County investigators are looking into a rash of car burglaries in an Ocean Springs neighborhood. Residents of Gulf Park Estates have reported seven car burglaries in the past week.

"It's not a common thing out here. It's hard to get used to locking things up when you've lived here for a lot of years and you've never had to lock anything before," said resident BD Root whose family had two cars hit.  Burglars took his wife's cell phone from her car and some money from his son's car.

"We've had, I think, seven since Friday. In the last month, I think, we've had about 20 car burglaries down there," said Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.

According to investigators, the burglaries are taking place at all times of night, and even some in the day.  Items reported missing include cell phones, GPS devices, and radios.

"We're putting a concentrated effort down there for extra patrol. We want to advise the residents down there, if they see anything that looks suspicious or suspicious vehicle in the area to please call us," said Byrd.

The Sheriff's office said there are several persons of interest, but no arrests have been made.  Investigators' best advice is not to give anybody an excuse to break into your car.

"We want to encourage everyone to remove all their valuables out of their car," said Byrd.

"It's just a quiet peaceful little place. You leave your house unlocked and your keys in the car, but not anymore," said Root.

Investigators suspect more cars have been hit, but not reported. Investigators also encourage anyone who has been affected to contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Crimestoppers is offering an award up to $1,000 for any information that leads to an arrest. The number for Crimestoppers is 1-877-787-5898. You can also text the word CSTIPS and your message to 274637 (CRIMES), or click here to leave a web tip.
