NEW ORLEANS (AP) - David West scored 17 points and stole the ball from Dirk Nowitzki with 2 seconds left to preserve the New Orleans Hornets' 99-97 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

After Jason Kidd had forced a turnover on an inbound pass, Dallas, trailing 98-97, was trying to set up for a potential game-winning shot when West stole the ball and made one of two free throws for the final margin.

The turnover soured an otherwise productive night for Nowitzki, who had 29 points and nine rebounds.

Chris Paul had 20 points and 11 assists for New Orleans (9-1), which avenged its first loss of the season Monday night in Dallas. Emeka Okafor had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Marco Belinelli scored 17 for the Hornets.
