Coast oystermen catching up to their limits

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Commission on Marine Resources received an oyster season update at Tuesday's monthly meeting. The commission limited oyster season to tonging only this year to try and maintain the health of area oyster reefs.

Tonging season opened November 8th for oyster reefs in the western portion of the Mississippi Sound. The daily limit is 10 sacks.

Fisheries Director Dale Diaz told commissioners the oystermen have been catching their limit much of the time.

"As of yesterday, November 15, there have been 202 boat trips and a total of 1546 sacks harvested," Diaz said. "Most days there have been between 25 and 33 boats working and about five or six boats from out of state."

Since the season has been closed to dredging oysters, the DMR allowed fishermen with a dredging license to receive a tonging licenses for this fall's limited season.
