BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Recreational fishermen in Mississippi are being surveyed by the Department of Marine Resources.
The DMR's Matt Hill on Tuesday updated the Commission on Marine Resources about the ongoing Marine Recreational Fisheries Survey. The program is a part of a larger survey directed by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Recreational fishermen are asked to answer questions about the kind of fish they catch, the gear they use, and what areas they usually fish. Statistics and data gathered by the surveys help guide DMR in its management of the resource.
"It provides a timely and reliable database on marine recreational fishing activity," said Hill. "It identifies notable changes in recreational catch and effort trends. We're talking about historic trends. We also evaluate the long term implications of management measures."
The DMR survey program has interviewed some 2,000 recreational fishermen over the past year. The information gathered is also forwarded to the Gulf States Fishery Commission.
