Jan. 11 special election will fill Palazzo's House seat

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - A special election will be held January 11, 2011 for House District 116 in Harrison County. Steven Palazzo resigned the seat after being elected Mississippi's Fourth District Congressman.

Governor Haley Barbour announced the special election date Monday. The qualifying deadline is December 12. If a run-off is necessary, it will be February 1, 2011.

Also on the ballot will be races to fill Senate District 6 seat in Lee and Pontotoc Counties, and Northern District Transportation Commissioner covering Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, Coahoma, Desoto, Grenada, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Lowndes, Marshall, Monroe, Montgomery, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Webster, Winston, and Yalobusha counties.

Alan Nunnelee resigned the Senate seat after his election as First District Congressman. The Northern District Transportation Commissioner spot opened when Bill Minor died November 1.

The winners in each race will serve the remainder of the office's term, through the end of 2011. The positions will be on the ballot again in 2011 as part of the regular state election cycle.
