New affordable housing subdivision in St. Martin

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - The front door of the Savannah Pines model home never seemed to stay closed as a parade of potential homebuyers kept coming though the front door.

"I love the open floor plan, the granite countertops and the doors. I like almost everything in it," said Hope Nguyen, potential homebuyer.

The granite countertops and stainless steel-front appliances in this three bedroom, two bath home impressed Hope Nguyen. At first, she wasn't sure if she could afford it.  But now, Nguyen says it could be very well within her and her husband's reach.

"We've been wanting to buy a house. We just didn't know if we'd be able to afford one, and this was the perfect program when we heard about it," said Nguyen.

Savannah Pines Program Director Jeff Cely said, "It's hard to find a home from the price range of $120 to $170,000, and we focus on that."

Investors of the Savannah Pines subdivision say they can offer homes as low as $120,000 dollars because of their partners.

Through the Mississippi Development Authority, potential buyers who qualify can get as much as $25,000 toward the cost of their home. Cely said that grant money can be added on top of other grant and loan programs.

Once completed, the first phase of Savannah Pines is set to have about 178 homes. Right now, only one is completed, and that is the model home.

Savannah Pines is also working with the Renaissance Corporation, Mercy Housing and the Bethesda Project. The groups help with case management to help place working families in affordable housing.

Savannah Pines is St. Martin located off Old Fort Bayou, about two miles down to the left.  For more information you can call 228-875-2928.
