Disabled American Veterans reach out to vets' entire family

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Veterans were also honored in Gulfport with a festival that was held in their honor.

The Gulfport chapter of Disabled American Veterans put on a Veterans Day event as a fundraiser for programs benefiting disabled veterans. Among other services, the organization helps veterans with receiving counseling and filing paperwork for government benefits.

The group said it's not just veterans that needs support when a service member returns from combat. It's the entire family.

"The wife has to see him every day struggle with that. The children have to see him every day struggle with that disability," said Jim Ski, Commander. "Sometimes it's traumatic. Sometimes it's more subtle, but it's still there. And he may have an action or reaction in his attitude or his personality that they don't understand. So we are here to help them share that with others that may be going through the same problem or to find out what it really is. Why is he having difficulty?"

Disabled American Veterans officials said they also provide wheelchairs and other medical supplies.
