VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) -

VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) - Vancleave High School honored Gulf Coast war heroes Wednesday morning for Veteran's Day. Sponsored by the VHS Junior Civitan Club, the high school wanted to "bridge the gap" between older and younger generations of veterans from South Mississippi.

"This is a time to remember those who have fallen and have served to keep our ideals of freedom secure and protected," Junior Civitan Club faculty adviser Debra Brown said. "In a time of uncertainty we need to thank our veterans for the sacrifice they have given as a call of duty to serve this great nation."

VHS invited local veterans and their spouses to meet with students in the school gym for a ceremony in their honor. The ROTC performed the Color Guard presentation, while the band, dance team, and drama class also entertained the veterans and their families. The Junior Civitan Club members also presented a gift to the most elderly World War II veteran at the ceremony.

Doug Walker was at this morning's ceremony and will have more on the big event later today on WLOX News.
