Students to skip school in order to learn

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Some students Jackson County will skip class today, but they won't get into any trouble. They'll be learning about the shipbuilding industry at Northrop Grumman in Pascagoula.

Northrop Grumman's shipyards on the coast employ thousands. The company knows some of those future workers will come directly from area high schools. So each year, the Pascagoula shipyard hosts a career fair to introduce students to the job opportunities in the industry.

The juniors learn about important shipbuilding crafts like: welding, pipefitting, shipfitting and electrical work. Students will get to meet and visit with some of the men and women who do those jobs.

They will also learn about professional careers such as engineering, design and human resources. The day will end with a tour of the shipyard that builds the Navy ships that defend our nation.

Assignment Education Reporter Trang Pham Bui will take the tour with the students and share their lessons on WLOX news and
