BIRMINGHAM, AL (WLOX) - Mississippi State University officials have confirmed that 20-year-old Nick Bell, a redshirt sophomore from Bessemer, Alabama, passed away Tuesday afternoon after a brief battle with skin cancer. He was just diagnosed earlier this fall.

According to a press release from the school, the Mississippi State football team was informed of Bell's passing at a team meeting Tuesday afternoon. Local clergymen and professionals from the university's Student Counseling Services Office will be brought in to meet with grieving members of the team.

Bulldog head coach Dan Mullen was in Birmingham and met with Bell and his family before returning Monday night with about 50 players.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced by the family at this time, but the Mississippi State Athletic Department will establish a memorial fund for the Bell family through the Bulldog Club.

Bell played in 16 games for the Bulldogs, earning four starts. Bell played in the first four games of the 2010 season, and started against Auburn and Georgia. He recorded 22 total tackles in his career, including seven this season. He was credited with one tackle for loss in the season opener against Memphis and another against LSU.
