Giant MoonPie will help Mobile ring in 2011

MOBILE, AL (WLOX) - MOBILE, AL (WLOX) - Leaders in Mobile are hoping a popular Mardi Gras treat will bring more tourists to downtown.

A giant MoonPie is being constructed atop the BankTrust building in the heart of downtown Mobile. Just as the crystal ball drops in Times Square, this illuminated MoonPie will help thousands of revelers ring in the new year.

The Retirement Systems of Alabama partnered with Chattanooga MoonPies and the City of Mobile on the $50 million project.

"What we want to put together is something that the city can be proud of, something that was unique to the state of Alabama, unique to Mobile, and really unique to the country," said Dr. David Bronner, CEO of Retirement Systems of Alabama.

It was Mobile Councilman Frederick Richardson who came up with the idea to incorporate the MoonPie into the city's New Year's Eve celebrations.

This year's MoonPie Over Mobile celebration will also feature a fireworks show, and live music. It's expected to attract more than 25,000 people.
