Greene Co. supervisor takes the stand in his Katrina fraud case

Posted: Updated:

Hattiesburg, MS (WDAM) - Closing arguments will begin in the morning in the Katrina fraud trial of former Greene County supervisor Lee Lambert.

The 65 year old Lambert is charged in federal court indictments with bribery, conspiracy, and two counts of income tax evasion. Prosecutors say the former county official received kickbacks from Mid South Pipe company in exchange for the debris cleanup contract after Katrina.

Company owner Thomas Landon has already entered into a plea agreement with the Federal Government and was the state's key witness against Lambert. The state rested its case just before 4:00 Wednesday afternoon, and Lambert then took the stand in his own defense. The defense rested shortly thereafter and Federal Judge Keith Starrett ordered both sides to begin closing arguments at 10:00 Thursday morning.
