WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - Hancock County welcomes its first soup kitchen today. Waveland United Methodist Church is using its Fellowship Hall as the dinning room for the new soup kitchen. The first meal served will be lunch.
The church will provide hot meals for the homeless or anyone who finds themselves having trouble putting food on their table. Church leaders told WLOX News that the need is greater than most folks would imagine.
"The Waveland area and Hancock County have a lot of low income people and this is a way to make sure everybody is afforded a healthy meal," said Robert Gayles, Pastor of Waveland United Methodist.
For now the kitchen will be open only one day a week, Wednesdays from 11 AM to 2 PM. But, Pastor Gayles hopes to eventually to have the kitchen open seven days a week.
Waveland United Methodist Church is located on the corner of Central Avenue and Vacation Lane, about two blocks West of Coleman Avenue.
Al Showers will be there when the first meal is served. Later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com, hear what this hot meal means to those in need.
