BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The 32nd annual Salute to the Military was held at the Coast Coliseum's newly expanded Convention Center Tuesday night. A capacity crowd was on hand for what is always a very special event in South Mississippi.
The keynote speaker was the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General James Carpenter. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corp, in 1971. He told those in the audience he was immensely honored to be a part of the event.
In the audience were not just representatives of all of our military bases here on the coast, but also business people and others. Along with hundreds of active duty military members, there were also veterans who have served our nation with honor.
Among those was Conrad Adams. The Louisiana farm boy was 18 went he served in World War II. With a tear in his eye, Conrad told us how blessed he and his family were. Adams and his five younger brothers all served in the war, and all came home unharmed.
As you looked around the ballroom and saw the many faces, one could only reflect on what the military means to us in South Mississippi. Not just from an economic standpoint, but these are also our friends and our neighbors.
As it always is, the 32nd annual Salute to the Military was a big success. The event is sponsored every year by the Coast Chamber of Commerce.
