Coastal cleanup goes inland

This weekend you have a chance to be a part of the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup. This year it will be a little different. In year's past, the cleanup has focused on the front beach and the barrier islands. But this year since BP has been cleaning up oil and trash from our beaches and barrier islands, the decision was made to move the cleanup to inland areas and waterways.

No doubt many of our Back Bay areas and marshes can use the extra attention. But the inland marshes and waterways have more sensitive habitat than what you might find along our beach front. So, if you take part this weekend remember to remove only marine debris. Driftwood and other natural debris such as vegetation should be left alone.

To find out how you can help, contact the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources at 228-523-4138. We encourage you to get out and enjoy nature this weekend and be a part of this unique cleanup effort.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
