Surge head coach Steffon Walby opens training camp

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Coach Steffan Walby and his Mississippi Surge are back with a goal of claiming the S-P-H-L championship.

Walby and company officially opened training camp Monday morning and held a scrimmage in the late afternoon.

Last season the Surge won the regular season but loss the best-of-five championship finals to the Huntsville Havoc.

Walby, the S-P-H-L Coach of the Year, has some familiar faces back along with new players. The combination should keep the Surge contenders for the league title.

Walby said, "When we went recruiting this summer we knew over the long haul we had to be a more physical team, a more spirited team."  He added, "Maybe sacrifice some goals but also be able to go out there and grind with the best of 'em. So far I like what I see and we're miles ahead of where we were last year in training camp."

Defenseman Steve Weidlich is back.  He believes the second-year Surge will have an easier training camp as they get ready for the 2010-2011 S-P-H-L season.

"The amount of players we have coming back from last year, it will be a little easier," he stated. "Walby won't have to teach everybody.  He'll have to teach the system to only a few guys.  I think everybody from last year should know the system by now. Yeah, in that aspect, we'll be a step ahead." 

The Surge will hold a morning practice session at nine Tuesday followed by another scrimmage beginning at 4 in the afternoon.  Both the practice session and scrimmage are open to the public.

The Surge will battle Columbus on October 16 in an exhibition game at 7 inside the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
