BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - By Jessica Bowman – email
BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - While many people in Bay Saint Louis enjoyed a day of tailgating and car spotting, a couple from Greenwood, MS, got to experience Cruisin' the Coast in style. They were the winners of a contest put on by the Mississippi Development Authority's Tourism Division. They said the VIP access they won really paid off.
Drivers revved their engines for the start of Bay St. Louis' Cruisin' the Coast. Hundreds of hot rods and people lined the streets listening to the Temptations play nothing but oldies.
Shannon Watson drove all the way from Greenwood making a pit stop in the Bay.
"I'm loving it. I've been in heaven all week, loving every bit of it," said Watson.
She won a prize package giving her and her husband VIP all-access passes to a week of cruisin' events.
"I won nine days and eight nights at the Beau Rivage, $400 in food and beverage, two tickets to see the Beach Boys and a week use of this 1970 convertible Chevelle car with $200 in gas," said Watson.
$200 in gas has taken her a long way in the red and black classic convertible.
"We've just been cruisin' in this down Beach Blvd," said Watson.
The Mississippi Delta couple won the tickets after applying online for the MDA's "Wish and Win" contest. The purpose of the contest was to try and attract more people to the coast after a dismal summer tourism season. If you asked the Watson's, they'll tell you the plan is working.
"It's wonderful, and we can't wait to come back," said Watson.
As the Watson's drove off to enjoy looking at more antique eye candy, the crowd went wild re-living the past.
One lady said, "Everything's better in the Bay."
The advertising campaign was funded from money BP gave to support the tourism industry.
