Chilean miners closer to rescue

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile (AP) - A drilling rig has punched through to the underground chamber where 33 miners have been trapped for 66 agonizing days under the Chilean desert.

Rescue teams will use an escape capsule to pull the miners out one-by-one. But first they must decide whether it's more risky to pull the miners through unreinforced rock, or to insert tons of heavy steel pipe to protect the miners.

A man whose son has been stuck in a Chilean mine says family members can finally begin to smile. Shouts of joy erupted after a drill broke through to the spot where 33 men are trapped, leaving a hole big enough for an escape capsule.
