PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A new $4 million center in Pascagoula will open soon just for seniors.
The current senior center on Delmas Avenue in Pascagoula was built in the 80s, and Coordinator and Director Melani Caver said now her seniors have outgrown the place.
"Fifteen years ago, when I came, we had about 50 people on the list. And today we got 750 people," Caver said.
Another problem at the current location is limited parking.
"We have had them drive by with hot dishes on the seat next to them looking for parking places. After a couple of times around the block with hot dishes, they just say, 'Oh well,' and go home. And that breaks my heart."
The solution to those problems lies just a few miles away on Live Oak Avenue, where a new, state-of-the-art senior facility is under construction.
"In Pascagoula, our seniors are important to us, and we just want to provide the best quality facility and programs for them," Recreation Director Darcie Crew said.
Work began on the senior center in 2009. The new facility is large, modern, and has plenty of space for parking.
"I feel like people are coming home when they walk into this building."
There are meeting rooms inside, as well as a game room, cooking classrooms, and a gym full of equipment for the seniors to stay fit.
"We have partnered with Singing River Hospital System, and they will help us with therapists to come and train the seniors on how to use the equipment," Crew said.
The city said it expects to open the new center within the next three months. Crew and Caver are both confident the seniors will be happy with their new hangout spot.
