BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The 'Mad Potter of Biloxi' is paying a visit to Beau Rivage this month. Several pieces of George Ohr pottery are now on display in the Jewelry Box, in the hotel's main lobby. The delicate pieces were unpacked Friday morning.
The idea is to generate excitement about the new Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, which opens next month.
"Phase one will open on November 8th to the public," said Museum Curator Barbara Johnson Ross. "We've had so many calls, people wanting to see George Ohr's pottery. This will give them a little preview before it opens. So when they call for the next month or so, we'll be able to tell them go visit the Beau Rivage."
The pieces on display at the Biloxi casino are part of a private collection, on loan to the museum from a private collector in Las Vegas.
"Jerry Kramer put these pieces on loan to the museum starting around 1996," said Ross. "We have several different loans from him and we made a selection of about 80 pieces that he has on loan with us. We picked some of the spectacular pieces that we think would look good in these cases here."
The Beau Rivage display is temporary. The pottery will be moved into the new museum when it opens in November.
Beau Rivage has been a long-time supporter of the Ohr Museum. In fact, before Katrina, there was a permanent display of Ohr pots in the main lobby. It also plays host to the annual Ohr Gala fundraiser, which will be held Thursday, November 4th.
