BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - You can help elementary school children who go hungry on weekends and holidays. Saturday, New Life Family Church on Popp's Ferry Road is holding a Fall Arts and Crafts Bazaar to raise funds for its Backpack Blessings Ministry. It's a woman's ministry that ensures children have nutritious meals seven days a week.
Imagine for just one moment what it would feel like to send your child to bed hungry.
"I don't even know how to put into words, how they would feel," said volunteer Laura Hankins back in 2009. That's why she and other volunteers, continue to fill backpacks with nutritious food each week for some Biloxi school children they will never even meet.
The ministry has touched hundreds of lives in the four years since it was started. Teachers and school nurses at Popp's Ferry and North Bay Elementary schools tell them about students who they know get at least one balanced meal each week day, but are actually going hungry on weekends. But not anymore, thanks to the ladies who volunteer and fill the backpacks.
Collette Field told WLOX News, "We pack each bag depending how many kids are in the family and what's really fun is when the kids are out of school for the week at Thanksgiving or Christmas time, we pack a bag that will last them through the entire break."
You can help the Back Pack Ministry volunteers feed children by stopping by the New Life Family Church Bazaar today between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and doing a little shopping. All proceeds will go to help the Backpack Blessings Ministry feed children in need.
