Children's healthy living center breaks ground in D'Iberville

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The project is being called "America's first childhood obesity center." The City of D'Iberville hosted a ground breaking Monday for a children's healthy living center and "Funville Activity Park."

Plans call for a 60,000 square foot health and wellness center, along with an adjoining play area that will include a water park and miniature golf.

Shawn Smith is the spark behind the project. Smith made a promise to her dying sister that she would devote her life to improving the health and well-being of children. The D'Iberville project is aimed at battling the childhood obesity epidemic in Mississippi.

"We are not here to rehash these numbers. Rather, we are here to take a proactive, community approach. Accountability and responsibility begins at home," said Shawn Smith with the Hattie Mae & Pals Foundation.

First graders from D'Iberville Elementary School helped break ground on the project. It will be located in Rudy Moran Park, off Lamey Bridge Road.
