BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have bounced back in a big way after losing the season opener to a very good South Carolina football team.
Coach Larry Fedora watched his Golden Eagles take care of business against Prairie View and Kansas. The Southern Miss defense has stepped up and it has made a big difference.
The Golden Eagles take aim on a third consecutive win Saturday at six, a road trip to Louisiana Tech in Ruston. The Bulldogs are 1 and 2 on the season and Fedora isn't looking for a let down.
Fedora said, "As a coaching staff you're constantly worried about. I mean it's proven week in and week out, it doesn't matter what you call it but if your team is ready to play and they play hard, you're got a chance against anybody. And if your team is not, you can get beat by anybody."
The Golden Eagles have been tabbed a 6 point favorite to beat Louisiana Tech in Ruston.
Last week Mississippi State had high hopes of ending 10 years of frustration to 15th ranked LSU, but the Tigers defense proved too strong in forcing 5 interceptions in a 29 to 7 win over the Bulldogs.
Mississippi State jumps back into Southeastern Conference play Saturday at six in Starkville, facing another hungry Bulldog team, Georgia.
We're going to have our hands full, " stated Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen. "Very talented Georgia football team coming here, but we're excited to be coming back home in front of our home fans. Expecting another sellout crowd."
Mullen wants his Bulldogs to take advantage of playing in Starkville and build a reputation of winning all its home games.
"You know when we build our program here, I've always said you have to be able to win your home games in the Southeastern Conference," Mullen explained. "If you don't win your home games it's hard to be successful and get your program up to championship levels."
Mississippi State hasn't beaten Georgia since a 38 to 14 victory in Jackson in 1974. Mississippi State will try ending a nine game losing streak to Georgia. The two teams haven't meet since 2006.
Both Bulldog teams are trying to avoid going 0 and 3 in Southeastern Conference play.
